"While I had full confidence in our engineering team’s ability to deliver the AI capabilities we envisioned, the Microsoft Co-Innovation Lab brought a level of strategic insight and hands-on experience that would have taken a significant amount of time to develop internally. Their expertise in areas like model selection, prompt engineering and cost optimization proved instrumental. Partnering with a group of engineers that has successfully built and deployed AI solutions across industries accelerated our roadmap and enhanced the quality of our outcomes." – Matt Dean, Chief Product Officer, Renaissant

Co-Innovation Challenge

Renaissant is a logistics software company revolutionizing freight management and operations by bridging gaps in legacy warehouse management, yard, and enterprise systems. Their workflow automation platform supports this mission with AI-powered services that enhance efficiency, safety, and other challenges in operations.

Part of Renaissant’s offerings include an industry-leading platform that enables professional drivers to check in at supply chain nodes like gates, docks, and yards. This solution dramatically improved the efficiency, safety, security and compliance of handling drivers picking up supply loads—a process that can happen hundreds of times a day.

Even with this innovative workflow, drivers were sometimes getting stuck during check-in, leading to either incomplete or inaccurate communication. Renaissant and their partners at TitleTown Tech saw an opportunity to optimize the platform further with AI-assisted, bi-directional communication that could assist drivers through moments of friction.

Renaissant and TitleTown Tech joined forces with the Microsoft AI Co-Innovation Lab in Milwaukee to unblock their journey to AI adoption with a voice-enabled driver check-in system that would optimize communication for drivers at supply chain nodes, enabling a more efficient and effective workflow.

In the Lab

Together in the AI Co-Innovation Lab in Milwaukee, our teams built an AI voice assistant with multiple language support that guides drivers to their truckload with intuitive, friendly instructions, reducing friction at pickup.

Our Lab team leveraged Azure AI Speech Service along with Azure OpenAI to power the prototype, which handles both data retrieval and communication. The resulting solution is an assistant that greets the driver, asks for the necessary information, verifies it with the system through an API, and provides the required guidance.

The solution is fast, cost-effective, and can handle multiple languages, thanks to the following capabilities:

  1. 1. Real-time audio streaming to and from a web app.
  2. 2. API calls to Azure OpenAI tools to validate load numbers, licenses, and other information.
  3. 3. Handling error handling, missing information, and retry mechanisms.
  4. 4. Support in multiple languages.

Our collaboration with Renaissant was successful in accelerating their time to deployment and in providing essential AI experience to turn their innovative ideas into a reality.

Solution Impact

Renaissant’s voice-enabled AI driver check-in system offers an optimized guidance system for drivers with voice enablement and multiple language support, reducing the time it takes to process truckload orders, minimizing information errors and miscommunication, and eliminating friction during the pickup process.

The partnership between Renaissant and the Microsoft AI Co-Innovation Labs helped remove roadblocks to AI adoption, built in best practices for AI solution design, and leveraged the stability and security of Azure to allow Renaissant to achieve more in logistics management.
